Fur Coat No Knickers
Studio One, Toi Tū, Grey Lynn, Auckland
Exhibition Wed 10 Dec 2025 - Thu 22 Jan 2026
For all the girls out there who coloured inside the lines, this exhibition visualises your collective resistance. It advocates for a chance to rebel, to be seen and to embrace a ‘Fur Coat No Knickers’ approach to life. That is, encouragement to live boldly, fiercely and without apology.
The works challenge the conventions of painting by taking it apart and reconstructing, using canvas, fabric, thread, and a sliver of irony.
FCNK makes flirtatious gestures while reflecting on past and present gender bias in art. A suite of works aiming to unsettle preconceptions.
This is a chance to claim space and confront expectations. As Mildred Constantine and Laurel Reuter observe, collage in fabric has given artists a “fragmented means of dealing with a fragmented world” (Whole Cloth, 1997, Pg 113). All too often, that insight resonates in our ruptured world today - and still with a cheeky defiance stitched in.
